True Grit

Greetings, the True Grit I am reviewing is a remake with the original starring John Wayne in 1969. This film is another good start to 2011 entertainment, with good performances by all actors including the actress, Hailee Steinfeld, who played a convincing Mattie Ross, it is made all the more impressive as it is her first major role. This is a Coen brothers movie who also created O’ Brother where art thou? Unfortunately there were occasions I could not make out a few of the sentences but after a while I got used to it and was still able to follow the plot.

The story is quite simple, Mattie Ross a young teenager is trying to hunt down Tom Chaney, the man who killed her father. In her pursuit she hires Rooster Cogburn played by Jeff Bridges, a US marshal who is not as physically fit as he was and is a heavy drinker, who despite his best effort cannot seem to persuade Mattie to leave him. A Texas Ranger by the name of La Boeuf, Matt Damon, is also hunting the same man for a different crime and has been doing so for a long time, he teams up with the others in an attempt to capture Chaney, brining him to justice. As the film progresses, splits occur between those following the murder’s trail and La Boeuf decides to track by himself. Over all this is a good film and is worth watching, hopefully more westerns will come because of this. The fifteenth chapter of the Invisible Agents is up in Warehouse 17.

Sam and Max Season one

Greetings, Sam and Max are a dog and rabbit freelance police who started off as a comic and have a few games, this being the first recent one. Sam is the dog who you can control, he plays the banjo, says sentences that don’t really make sense but is the one solving the problems. Max is a violent, hyperactive rabbit who provides helpful hints.

Other characters include Bosco, paranoid owner of Bosco’s inconvenience who charges ridiculous amounts of money for the latest B-tech technology, which is needed for completing the episode. Sybil Pandemic, neighbour to Sam and Max who constantly changes her job due to some bizarre occurrence or reason. Jimmy two teeth is a criminal rat, who lives in Sam and Max’s office and causes them problems throughout the game.  The other regular character is Prismatologist Hugh Bliss, the leader of a cult to make the world content.

A plot runs through all the episodes, with a regular theme of hypnotism creating each case. The first is about three hypnotised brothers, who as child stars were known as the Soda poppers. Under a failed child star Brady Culture’s command, they distribute videos which have a hypnotic effect when played in the VCR. Sam and Max have to foil his plans to uncover the truth of who is behind the hypnotism and why. It has a cartoon style to it which increases the fun of it, some of the problems are difficult to solve, I enjoyed this game and am looking forward to the others. The fourteenth chapter of the Invisible Agents is up in Warehouse 17.

The King's Speech

Greetings, the King’s speech is based on the story of how King George the sixth tries to overcome his lifelong difficulty with speaking. Colin Firth plays King George, who covers the role brilliantly, giving an outstanding performance. Many therapists had tried to help George with his speech impediment but ultimately could not, leading to Elizabeth, his wife seeking out an Australian therapist with rather odd techniques.

Geoffrey Rush plays Lionel Logue, who over time despite George’s disbelief at the beginning, lessens his patient’s stammer. Unfortunately, King George the Fifth dies of old age leading his oldest son, Edward to succeed him. After a while it becomes apparent, Edward is not capable of being Monarch and abdicates the throne to be with Wallis Simpson. The distraught George, who is doubting himself, accepts the position of King. With the verge of war coming, King George the sixth needs Lionel Logue by his side to help him carry out his speech to Great Britain. I believe this movie is one of the best films I have ever seen and as a result I award it with the title Super Duper fantastic 100% the best, the second movie to have been award this on my blog, the original being Avatar. The thirteenth chapter of the Invisible Agents is up in Warehouse 17.

A painted house

Greetings, A painted house is a book written by John Grisham about a family called the Chandlers who try and survive life farming the cotton in the south American state Arkansas during 1952. This is the first novel I have read by this author, his other plots are based on law and court and I really enjoyed this book. It does not sound exciting but one reason I liked it was I had never read this type of story. The plot unfolds from the view of Seven year old Luke Chandler who slowly losses his innocence as events unfold before him. Other main characters include his father Jesse, his mother, his grandfather who is really called Eli but is continuously referred to as Pappy and his grandmother.

Every year the Chandlers hire people from the North and Mexicans to help pick their cotton, Luke and Eli employee a family called Spruills and Mexican labour led by Miguel. As time passes rivalries build between Hank Spruill, a character known for making life difficult, his own family members, the Mexicans and the Chandlers, Luke in particular is picked on. When during a weekend at town Hank gets involved with a gang of violent siblings called Siscos who fight anyone they wish to, Spruill comes to the challenge and defeats three of them in one go. Later on it is revealed one had died from his wounds and the local police officer Stick Powers tries to bring Hank to justice, this would therefore interrupt the picking process. Throughout the book Hank becomes more of a problem and the Chandlers have to find away to solve their problems.

The wording in this novel was easy to follow and interesting to read, the plot picked up towards the end at a quicker pace. I would recommend this novel as it is different, original and fun when the characters are understood. The twelfth chapter of the Invisible Agents is up in Warehouse 17.

Call of Juarez

Greetings, Call of Juarez is the original game in the two part series. It is set 17 years after the Bound in Blood and includes some of the same characters such as Reverend Ray. It follows two plots, with Billy’s and Ray’s side of the story which eventually collide. Billy Candle at the beginning is returning to his Step Father’s farm in order to find his mother after he failed to find the lost gold of Juarez. His relationship with Thomas, his step father is frosty as Billy states that he was usually beaten by Thomas claiming it would make him into a man. Once he is near his destination, he hears gunshots and discovers the copses of his mother Marisa and Thomas.

While at his church, Reverend Ray is preaching when a woman halts the service to inform McCall Thomas’ farm is under attack. Ray runs to his brother’s aide only to find him and his wife dead, with a suspicious Billy running away at the sight of him. The Reverend picks up his weapons from Bound in Blood and armed with his faith he goes after Candle believing that he had murdered his parents. Billy is running for his life, trying to find out who killed his parents and why.

The game play took a while to grasp and understand but when I moved through the game progress it became a lot easier. There are also extra missions that are unlocked after the campaign is finished, in the levels it is a plot built around a Deputy with no name chasing a bunch of rustlers who kill people in their way. I enjoyed this game although I found the sequel had improved on it but none the less an exciting experience. The eleventh chapter of the Invisible agents is up in Warehouse 17.

Iron man 2

Greetings, Iron man 2 is a marvel film about a comic book hero called Tony Stark or his other half Iron man. I had reviewed the original movie a few years ago and this movie has many of the same actors and actresses in it for instance Robert Downey Junior and Gwyneth Paltrow. It delivers much of the same action packed fun as the first movie and the acting was just as good but I preferred the original. I’m not stating this was a bad movie, it just felt that it wasn’t as good because it wasn’t a new experience, unlike the first one.

The plot is rather complex, the story itself begins decades before the movie when Stark’s father and a Russian named Venko are trying to build a new way to create and sustain energy. Venko is deported back to Russia suspected of being a Soviet spy and dies at the beginning of the movie, his son, Ivan  decides to take revenge on Iron man as Stark has some of his father’s legacy in building the corporation Stark industries. Ivan takes on the identity of Whiplash , with the help of an electric device he had built.

Iron man has enough problems to deal with as a rival entrepreneur called Hammer wants the suit to be given over to the US, this is because he believes Tony Stark is reckless and the suit is a dangerous weapon. Another factor is the point that Stark’s suit which is keeping him alive is actually killing him by contaminating his blood. So Iron man has to solve these problems during the span of the film. Overall it is pleasant to watch and relatively exciting but it wasn’t better than the original. If you’re a fan of Iron man or are at least interested in superheroes, I would encourage you to check it out. The tenth chapter of the Invisible Agents is up in Warehouse 17.
